Are You Sick and Suffering Because of Sin in Your Life?

My goal is to write about certain subjects to pique interest and hopefully help to connect some dots.

Have you ever been through or are going through a hard time in your life where there have been financial hardships, sickness, broken relationships, weakness, etc?

Do you ever wonder why this uncomfortable issue may be happening to you or your family members and what may be causing it?

Have your friends, relatives, family and religious acquaintances come up to you and try to tell you why the hardship is happening to you and what you must do about it?

It is true that some problems might be clearly defined, but others are not that simple.

The problem with the religious institutions today is that they love to give you advice that point to solutions to your problems through the supposed wisdom of religious celebrities where you have to pay for their wares to access their knowledge in the quest to be healed. In the end, many people's eyes gloss over thinking they have been set free by by attending one of their 'pain and suffering' courses or reading the latest best seller only to end up even more confused.

The religious merry-go-round never points to the truth as most people just trade in one problem for another because they have bought into the latest snake oils rather than focusing on why God allows things to happen in our lives.

Accuracy & Precision

How we can discover truth through the terms 'accuracy' and 'precision.' Accuracy can be defined as how close you are to the truth by the tried and true values that have been tested and precision is the degree of error between the results of those tested values. The closer the values are to each other, the greater the precision. For example, hitting the bullseye and being able to do it repeatedly is being both accurate and precise.

The common problem many have is approximations that are made after buying into religious half-truths and then apply these things into their lives and then onto others.

When we look at the disciplines of chemistry and physics, a high degree of precision and accuracy may be needed to test something that is quite volatile. The purpose is to avoid an explosion. However, is some cases only an approximation or less accurate calculation only needs to be made. A rough estimation would suffice.

As worshippers of the one true God, we need to have both a precise and accurate representation of truth. Unfortunately, many are being guided by rough estimations.

The degree of deception can be determined by how accurately and precisely we research and study God ways for our lives.

Half -Truths

There are many half- truths that many have bought into. The cause of their sickness and suffering is determined by the man-made doctrines they have been taught in the institutional church system. Although some of what they believe may be accurate, it may be missing precision all together.

Here are a few examples:

  • The sin in your life such as bitterness, unforgiveness, judgementalism, laziness, etc, is causing all your problems.
  • You are being disciplined by God for you behaviours.
  • You are demon possessed, tormented or being influenced by them.
  • You do not have enough faith.

There is truth to each one of these phrases and there are many scriptural references to back them up. However, with false doctrines may be some accuracy, but it is missing the precision. In many cases, the greater context of Scripture has been ignored.

The many supposed ‘healing’ ministries that are marketed in the church system today often use one aspect of the examples given above to take advantage of people. Their purpose is to market their religious 'cures' to obtain the monetary. Many have boughten into the mantra of, 'If you buy our books and come to our conferences you will find healing and comfort from all your pain and suffering in your life.'

The sad truth is that when you tell someone about the hardships you are going through, they will not point to God, but to religious men as the 'cure.' People are buying into the sophistry of religious salesmen who are exploiting the suffering and becoming rich off of people's afflictions. There is nothing new under the sun. Men have twisting truth for centuries. They will focus on one aspect of truth and make you ignorant of the rest.

There are many going through hard times in their lives. We must trust in God no matter what the circumstance,. We must be careful to have the right perspective and avoid the religious sales pitches. Many have been taken advantage of because they lack discernment and get hoodwinked into believing something about their pain and suffering that is not true.

And you shall remember the entire way on which the Lord, your God, led you these forty years in the desert, in order to afflict you to test you, to know what is in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. - Deuteronomy 8:2

If there will arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of a dream, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder of which he spoke to you happens, [and he] says, "Let us go after other gods which you have not known, and let us worship them,"you shall not heed the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of a dream; for the Lord, your God, is testing you, to know whether you really love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul. - Deuteronomy 13:3

Behold I have refined [tested] you, but not as silver; I have chosen for you the crucible of poverty. - Isaiah 48:10

And the Lord of Hosts tests the righteous, He sees the kidneys and the heart. Let me see Your vengeance from them for to You I have revealed my cause. - Jeremiah 20:12

These are only a few Scriptural references above that can be perused to give understanding to why we may be sick, suffering and heavy burdened. It does not necessarily mean that we are in sin. It could mean that God may be using our circumstances to refine us in Him.

False Ministries

Don’t get caught up on the religiosity of the false religious ministries that rely on twisting half-truths for their own benefit, not yours.

Some of the many examples of suffering and affliction in Scripture were people suffering in order for God to develop their character. It does not necessitate that that you may have a demon or are in sin. You do not need to buy into the latest religious gimmicks to be 'set free.'

Pain and suffering may be opportunities for God to help us learn, trust and refine our faith. Even though we may be in hardship, God is pleased with us when we suffer for righteousness sake.

We live in a fallen and sinful world. The reality is that there is pain and suffering all around us. It can be a depressing sight if our focus is on this temporal world. Even though times may be tough and seem to never end, our hope is not in the temporal, but the eternal reality of who we are in God.

It’s a Matter of Perspective

It is true that our sufferings may be a consequence of sin in our lives, but it also could be the result of walking out the faith in God in our own lives. We we focus on Him, He will give us hope and comfort as we trust Him in His ultimate plan for us.

Sickness, suffering, affliction and hardship can be a result of sin, but it also can be a means of God working in our lives to refine and purge what is not of Him. No matter what the cause, our eyes should always be focus on God's instructions for our lives as He has our best interests in mind.
